The Institution of marriage was a pagan custom in which a coupling that resulted in children was recognized. Why? Because a production based society does not have a communal setting for raising kids, unlike in early tribalism where children were charges of the entire clan. In over-production based class societies child rearing falls on the feet of the direct relatives. Marriage is the custom one must undergo in order to get the protection they seek for their children from the state in the event a direct relative can not provide. For instance, if your life long lover died, you would not be qualified for any SS benefit, UNLESS you were married. You can not receive health insurance benefits of your life long partner UNLESS you are married. I am NOT able to terminate an estranged biological parent's right, even if they expressed no desire for custody, UNLESS I have an adoptive parent lined up, because the state will not take on responsibility of parental role for the financial security of kids.
Gays especially have a hard time in over-production based societies because they do not fit the alpha male identity of manual production, which contributes to social bias. This is why historically gays have been treated well in tribal communities and socialist based countries versus horridly in capitalist societies. The state in an over-production capitalist society has one focus: maintain order of production to ensure class hierarchy. Insurance corporations are the major lobbyists of the anti-gay marriage movement, why? Because they would have to provide benefits to 1.2 million dependents if it passed, as head of the GOP put it: "Gay marriages are bad for business, the cost of providing benefits would strain their growth".
